BOOK REVIEW..."MOSQUITO CREEK INN"

 

As with 2019 so went 2023 - also a banner year seeing recognition for two more of my books. "Come Sit In My Kitchen" earned a Distinctive Favorites Award for adult suspense then two months later "MOSQUITO CREEK INN" was a selected 'Winner' for a Purple Dragonfly Award, YA mystery, from Story Monsters Ink magazine.

For this MG/YA seven book mystery series, once again I tapped into my inner 12-year-old, which turned out to be quite close to the surface of my adult facade.

I, my siblings and contemporaries were so fortunate. We grew up and went to school at a time well before reoccurring, living nightmares like Colombine or Sandy Hook. With this series I walked a fine manageable line between the innocence of a small-town, rural community in Montana merged with the intrusion of some real-life threats anyone can face.

This book is a well written mystery targeted to the YA audience, but adults will enjoy it as well. The young characters are realistic, the setting is authentic, and the story is engaging. Most importantly the group of characters work so well together, that you feel you know them, and actually like them, they are all so relatable. Kids working together to solve a mystery is always a good premise, and this story is no exception. Looking forward to reading more in this series,

Much of my mystery-suspense plot efforts are targeted to an adult reading audience, but every now and then an idea for youth readers emerged and I went with that inspiration too. I was excited to explore another 'voice'... Also in 2019, from Story Monsters Ink, magazine I earned a first-place award for youth literature, that was so unexpected but equally gratifying. Some writers might consider an award enough validation. However, I still wanted more detailed insight, that might also keep me stay-on-track for future books in the youth genre. MYSTERY SHE WROTE..."COME SIT IN MY KITCHEN"

Ahhh, my mystery number nine... I had intended to write this book, years before I finally got it finished, but it wasn't written as I had originally planned. I grew up with a dad and uncle [Dad's younger brother] and a grandmother who told oodles of funny and interesting family stories, with colorful characters. With those stories rolling around in my head for decades, this family-memoir was - in my mind - going to be humorous. However, diving into research for more of the history for global events of their 'time' pointed me in an entirely new direction.  Certainly, all the family members I had prepared to feature were still included, but too many social, global and political events between WWI and WWII kept intruding and got in my way. So, what was happening around them got woven in with the two generations before me in my family as well. MYSTERY SHE WROTE..."THE CROW CHILD"

  This project was not my first 'dive' into writing for Middle-Grade/Young Teen readers, but it was my first mystical-adventure plot that featured a true superhero as the main character. Like a few of my adult plots this too began as separate novella style books specifically geared to [as one MG teacher described] the 'reluctant reader".  However, the premise came from an unusual place. In 2008 a young mother whose five-year-old son was born with Cystic Fibrosis contacted me. Her son's favorite superhero was Spiderman. Just before bed they often read several pages from a Spiderman comic. The night before, her son was despondent because: "I guess no one  like me could be a superhero, huh?  The mother knew I was working on a young teen mystery series, but wondered if I could write a book about a sick kid - who could also be a superhero?  I found this new challenge appealing.
